Join us on Friday, April 13th at 12:30pm for our Climate Day of Action! We need to make a big showing at the Wilson Building to make sure the Council knows just how much support there is for this groundbreaking climate policy.
Councilmember Mary Cheh is offering a June 5th introduction date for a carbon rebate policy! This is an exciting step forward for the climate movement in the District. But here’s the thing: the June 5th introduction date is just a proposal, not a commitment. Councilmember Mary Cheh and Chairman Phil Mendelson worried about pushback from Big Business.
We need to keep up the pressure to encourage our Councilmembers to introduce the bill this June!
On Friday, April 13th, we’ll kick off an action-packed day with a rally at 12:30 pm outside the Wilson Building, led by students from across the District. Then around 1:00 pm, we’ll head inside to lobby for the proposed carbon rebate bill. We'll meet our legislators face to face so that they hear from young people--and our whole coalition of nearly 70 groups--urging the D.C. Council to protect all of our futures.
By making fossil fuel polluters pay for the real and damaging costs of their emissions, we can unleash the clean energy solutions we need, and make D.C. families better off in the process. With a carbon fee-and-rebate policy, called the Climate and Community Reinvestment Act of D.C., companies that buy and sell fossil fuels in the District would pay a steadily-rising fee on each ton of heat-trapping pollution they cause.
The majority of the money raised would be returned progressively through a quarterly “rebate” to every D.C. resident, with additional support to low-income District residents.
This carbon rebate policy already has broad support from over 60 local businesses and advocacy organizations here in the District.
The Climate Community and Reinvestment Act would put more money into the pockets of D.C. families, ensuring that working-class residents are better off in the transition to clean energy. It would also mean less pollution wrecking our lungs and our atmosphere, more investment into energy efficiency solutions, and a faster transition to clean, renewable energy sources.
